It seems that the British captain James Cook, upon landing on the Australian continent, named the melaleuca bush Tea tree, fascinated by its similarity to the plant infused by the English.

During World War II it was used as a first aid essential oil, effective for a large number of infections, as well as treating wounds and skin problems.

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves.
