Passionflower is a perennial climbing plant from the Passifloraceae family. Its flowers have a very distinctive shape, which is why it is known as the passion flower.
The active ingredient in this plant is the aerial parts, which contain flavonoids (most notably the heterosides scaphoside and isoscaphoside, vitexin, isovitexin, vicenin, lucecin, among others) as well as traces of essential oil and phytosterols. The main active ingredient is vitexin.
Properties
Traditionally, passionflower has been used as an anxiolytic, tranquilizer, and antispasmodic. It promotes prolonged sleep and inhibits aggression and anxiety.
